FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you do weddings?

A: Not generally, although I have shot many weddings, but after wishing that I had a megaphone and a sheepdog to round everyone up - not to mention a degree in diplomacy - I prefer to work in other areas. That is not to say however that if a client was particularly keen to use PSI, that I wouldn’t do it.

Q: You seem to cover a very wide range of subjects rather than specialise in one area.

A: I believe that a good photographer will see a good picture no matter when, where or what it is. To continue the analogy used on the biography page, a chef will use a great many ingredients to make many different kinds of meals. Also - and this is only a personal view - I believe that specialisation does not necessarily lead to better results. Quite often staleness can set in. By photographing an ever changing range of subjects, it means that you can always keep the ideas stream flowing.

Q: What do you prefer to use, film or digital?

A: These days I find myself working more and more off digital. The quality of high end digital SLRs is so good now that for most applications the results are indistinguishable from film. Go through the site and see if you can see which shots were taken on film and which were digital. The results may surprise you.

I still do work off film and am happy to do so if a client has a preference.

Q: Do you work out of a studio?

A: No. For most applications it is not necessary. For portait and commercial headshot work, I have a fully mobile studio set up. It is a great deal more time efficient for business people to have the photographs taken at their work place rather than take time out of a busy schedule to have their picture taken. For private clients, I go to them. In my experience, most people feel incredibly uncomfortable being photographed. With this in mind, people feel more at ease and in control in their own environment. A relaxed client is a better subject than an uptight one.

Q: What makes a good photograph?

A: Connection with the viewer. It’s as simple as that. There are all the technical and essential elements which can be achieved in their own right and still not connect. Think of it like cars - some cars today are technically perfect but still don’t stir the soul like an AC Cobra or an old E-Type.

Q: And now the Million Dollar Question. Why should I use PSI?

A: Because you will get photographs which will have impact, imagination and spontenaity, and a level of customer service and professionalism you will be delighted with.
